ELECTRICAL SAFETY QUESTIONS

Do I have a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel? Should I be concerned?
Federal Pacific Stab-Lok panels (look for the FPE logo inside the panel door) and Zinsco panels are known fire hazards — their breakers don't reliably trip under overload. Insurance companies are increasingly refusing to insure homes with these panels. If you have one, schedule an evaluation. We'll confirm the brand and give you a replacement quote.
My breaker keeps tripping. What does that mean?
A breaker that trips occasionally is doing its job — protecting you from overload. A breaker that trips repeatedly on the same circuit means either the circuit is genuinely overloaded (too many appliances on one circuit) or there's a wiring problem. Don't just reset it and ignore it — repeated trips on the same breaker need investigation.
Is it safe to DIY electrical work?
Simple tasks like replacing a light switch or outlet in a room where you can verify the circuit is off are manageable for a confident DIYer. Anything involving the main panel, new circuits, or work near the service entrance is not — the risks of electrocution and fire are serious. Houston also requires permits for panel work, which means a licensed electrician must be involved.
How do I know if I need a panel upgrade?
Signs you need a panel upgrade: your panel is 40+ years old, breakers trip regularly, you want to add a large appliance (EV charger, hot tub, AC unit, generator), you're finishing a basement or adding a room, or your panel is a known problem brand. A 60 or 100-amp panel is seriously undersized for modern homes — most Houston homes need 200 amps.

WHY IRONCLAD FOR ELECTRICAL

TECL Licensed Electricians
Every IronClad electrician holds a Texas Electrical Contractor License (TECL). Non-licensed electrical work is illegal in Texas and voids your homeowner's insurance.
We Pull Permits
Work requiring a permit gets a permit. Some contractors skip this — it saves them time but creates problems for you at resale and with insurance.
Inspection on First Try
Our work passes city inspection the first time. That's a track record we're proud of, and it means your project isn't delayed.
Thermal Imaging Camera
We use thermal imaging to find hot spots behind walls before they become fires. Standard diagnostic procedure on all electrical service calls.
All Panel Brands
Square D, Siemens, Eaton, Leviton — we work with all major brands and can match your existing panel for sub-panel additions.
Generator Certified
We're certified installers for Generac and Kohler whole-home generators. Gas hookup coordination with our licensed plumbers included.

Safety First

If you smell burning or see sparks — do not attempt to diagnose it yourself. Turn off the breaker and call. Electrical fires start behind walls where you can't see them.
